The drug OxyContin, generically Oxycodone, is an analgesic painkiller that can lead to serious addictive behavior and even death. Oxycodone, the active ingredient of OxyContin, is a highly addictive drug, similar to morphine. It is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency). Addiction can occur after only 5 to 7 days of use. Symptoms of OxyContin withdrawal are the same as any withdrawal from narcotic addiction. These symptoms can begin within hours of the last use and last up to 1 week.
Oxycontin may also lead to unconsciousness, dizziness and depression, and some circumstances, an overdose may also cause a coma and even death. In 2001, this lead the FDA to require the drug’s manufacturer, Purdue Pharma, to significantly strengthen the warnings section in the labeling for OxyContin. The labeling now includes a "black box" warning communicating to patients and physicians the potentially lethal consequences of crushing the controlled-release tablets and injecting or snorting the contents.
