If you have been taking Yaz, Yasmin or the generic equivalent Ocella, you may be at risk. Each of these birth control pills contain ethinyl estradiol and the new progestin drospirenone (DRSP), which is well-known for increasing the risk for hyperkalemia, a condition that causes elevated levels of potassium that lead to abnormal heart rhythm.
Yaz is one of the best-selling oral contraception pills in the U.S., with 2007 sales of $616 million, but evidence is growing that Yaz, togerther with Yasmin and Ocella, carries serious health risks. According to the FDA, these drugs can lead to excessive amounts of potassium in the blood, which may result in potentially serious heart and health problems. Because of this risk, women with conditions that predispose them to hyperkalemia (such as renal insufficiency, hepatic dysfunction and adrenal insufficiency) should not take YAZ or its generic equivalents.
These contraceptives have also been linked to other adverse side effects, such as blood clots, thrombosis and even death.
