What Causes E-Cig Explosions?

Vaporizers / e-cigarettes use heating coils to vaporize a flavored nicotine liquid, creating a smoke effect. E-cigarettes are powered by lithium-ion batteries. That type of battery is designed with alternating layers of anodes and cathodes separated by a film containing a liquid electrolyte. If this electrolyte is overheated by the heating coil, it can cause the flammable material to explode.

The effects of the exploding e-cigarettes include:

  • Broken neck
  • Broken teeth
  • Third-degree burns
  • Facial fractures

Multiple government agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control, have been investigating the effects of vaping. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has recorded 25 incidents of vaporizer explosions from 2009 to 2014. This number, unfortunately, only includes explosions reported by the news. As the use of e-cigs is rapidly becoming widespread, this number will climb.
