Jeffrey H. Sloman
Jeffrey H. Sloman recently joined the firm after a distinguished 20-year career as a federal prosecutor and, for the past year, as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. The Southern District of Florida – the third largest federal prosecutor’s office in the United States with approximately 270 Assistant United States Attorneys – covers a geographical area from Key West to Vero Beach and services approximately 6.5 million people. The United States Attorney is the district’s chief law enforcement officer whose responsibility is to enforce and defend the laws of the United States. During his tenure as United States Attorney, Mr. Sloman and his Office handled some of the nation’s largest and most significant cases including those affecting the environment.
Prior to becoming the United States Attorney in June 2009, Mr. Sloman served as the district’s Criminal Division Chief and First Assistant United States Attorney – the number 2 and 3 positions in the Office. In that capacity, he supervised many national and local significant matters including the prosecution of Washington D.C. lobbyist Jack Abramoff, former Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne, the founders of the Cali, Colombian cocaine cartel Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela and Switzerland’s largest bank, UBS AG.
As an Assistant United States Attorney, Mr. Sloman successfully tried approximately 50 cases to verdict. He successfully prosecuted the first post-911 terrorism case in the United States (United States v. Mandhai, et al.), the South Florida crew of the Gambino crime family of La Cosa Nostra (United States v. Trentacosta, et al.), and one of the area’s most prolific health care fraud rings (United States v. Castillo, et al.) just to name a few.
Mr. Sloman is the recipient of two Department of Justice awards for excellence as an Assistant United States Attorney. In addition to prosecuting numerous federal criminal trials in the Southern District of Florida, he has been admitted to and has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1983 and upon graduation, Mr. Sloman worked for a large Miami law firm where he specialized in the areas of products liability and commercial litigation.
